Superfoods are your answer to making healthy lifestyle choices, and can even reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke and cancer that plague us all in older life.

But what makes a food a superfood?

These are foods that are nutritionally dense and rich in antioxidants, like Salmon, Avocado and Blueberries.

Antioxidants are important for your skin’s wellbeing; they protect the skin against the harmful effects of everyday chemicals known to cause cell damage as we get older.

Here at BIOEFFECT, we have compiled a list of our favourite superfoods that keep our skin looking and feeling great. Rich in nutrients, our five superfoods can be used across two simple recipes which we feature later in this post, so you can impress your friends and keep them healthy at the same time.

Salmon

This fish is protein packed and rich in:

Omega 3 Fatty Acids These ultimately reduce the body’s production of inflammatory substances by decreasing clogged pores, averting fine lines and wrinkles. They keep your skin supple and moisturised, leaving your skin with a smooth texture by producing collagen, keratin and melanin. Collagen helps skin retain water, therefore reducing wrinkles and fine lines to keep your skin foundation strong.

Selenium This mineral protects the skin from sun exposure and protects cells from damage, by neutralising free radicals and other skin damaging compounds before they can lead to wrinkles.

Vitamin D While keeping bones and teeth strong, having sufficient vitamin D in the skin allows it to minimise acne, boost skin elasticity, stimulate collagen production, enhance radiance and lessen the appearance of lines and dark spots.

Astaxanthin This helps to scavenge bacteria and toxic oxygen radicals and improve skin elasticity, thereby reducing acne and dark spots.

Eggs

Eggs are high in sulfur and lutein, which promotes skin hydration and elasticity. Eggs are also filled with heaps of protein, which helps cell regeneration by providing essential amino acids. The body uses these acids to create new proteins within skin cells. Proteins like collagen and elastin give strength to skin tissue whilst melanin contributes to your skins colour. Eggs’ Iron content helps red blood cells function correctly and provide cells all over the body with fresh oxygen.

In relation to our skin, eggs contain some very important vitamins that dominate several process in our bodies that keeps skin looking its healthiest.

Vitamin A This is a vitamin that helps our cells control gene activity, which is essential for new cells to develop. This cell development focuses on the development of new skin cells and growth of new tissue, typically necessary when healing wounds.

Vitamin B Another controlling vitamin which is important for new cell growth. The process requires the growth of keratinocytes, which are protein rich cells that make up the outer layer of the skin tissue.

Avocado

With a 74% water content, a source of hydrocarbons and natural oils, this fruit is vitamin filled and your go to superfood.

Mother Nature’s moisturiser, the avocado is a great source for antioxidant carotenoids like alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. All of these provide important protection against environmental aggressors that regularly harm your sin by causing fine lines, wrinkles and other aging agents. So the high amounts of antioxidant carotenoids counteract these effects by improving skin density, thickness, tone and the skins general appearance.

Vitamin C has strong antioxidant qualities which are needed to create elastin and collagen. These bind your skin cells together and maintain firmness and structure.

Vitamin E helps to prevent free radical damage from oxidising fats in your skin cells and lead to aging skin. Vitamin E also reduces the effects of UVA and UVB radiation from too much sun exposure on the skin.

Avocados also contain monounsaturated fatty acid  that maintains moisture in the skin by keeping it soft and hydrated. These good fats also regenerates damaged skin cells by leaving them soft and moisturised.

Cucumber

A 96% water content hydrates and leaves the skin intact and well moisturised.

The multitasking vegetable is a highly anti inflammatory and useful cooling agent, typically useful around the eye area and helps to cool the inflammatory response in your body. Cucumber is great to use on the skin as it is an easy way to be rid of oiliness and leaves you with a satisfying glow. Whatsmore, the juice can be used as a cleanser, relieving blemishes and acne. It does this by tightening and firming up your skin.

The presence of manganese and potassium allows cucumber to be used to reverse signs of aging, reducing the amount of fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin patches. Whilst vitamins A, B and C help to increase immunity levels, keep your skin radiant and give you energy.

Watermelon

Filled with a water content of 92%, the hydrating watermelon is one of the most intriguing superfruits. Did you know you can eat the rind?

The watermelon is a wonderfully sweet superfood that contains a high volume of Lycopene, the red pigment present in watermelon flesh; it is a powerful carotenoid antioxidant and very important for our body in many ways. Whilst it is a positive source to reduce cancer cells, lycopene is also considered to have beneficial effects for inflammation. It protects the cells from damage caused by free radicals and prevents cells from becoming damaged.

Vitamin C in watermelon is essential for collagen synthesis. Collagen helps to keep your skin feeling supple and strong.

Vitamin A is an important nutrient in watermelon that adds to your skin health by repairing and crating new skin cells.

These antioxidants get rid of free radicals from the body and stop all signs of skin aging.
